We see it everywhere. Glossy, frizz-free, flowing, bouncing, sweeping, cascading–then below we read, “Buy so-and-so hair gel and never worry about your hair again!”. Yeah, right.
There’s a lot that pretty brunette in the picture will never tell you about that hair product, the first is that she probably didn’t use that product herself. The product will take up time to use. It’s stock full of chemicals. It will smell bad. It will damage your hair–the list goes on and on!
But why, why, why?
Why don’t those pretty packaged bottles work? Why doesn’t it transform your hair like it promises it will?
This is the secret I’ve found. Your hair is beautiful with nothing in it, however, at the moment it is hidden beneath damage. This damage will not be healed by more hair products; in fact, it will hurt it more! And besides hurting it with hair styling products, we hurt it with toxic shampoos, fierce wringing, ruthless brushing, violent ironing– it’s no wonder our hair is crisp and dehydrated! The reason why modern hair products can’t fix our hair is because they don’t fix the real problem (Or the root problem. Har, har…). They quickly cover up what we want them to, but in the long run, they’re useless. They trick you into having to buy more and more because it appears like they’re working. What we really need to be doing with our hair is seeking for what brings out the best of what is already in our hair. Your hair has what it needs to shine; you just need to find the best way to polish it.
My process with my hair has been a long one, and I know it’s not finished yet. I love the feeling of not using lots of products on my hair. When I hear people talk of their many hair products, I just smile to myself. But I also understand the want to put something in it, just for fun. When I was first beginning my adventures with Curly Girl (Read my previous post on hair: Part 1, and Part 2.), I began making my own gel with Flax seeds and lavender. The problem with most homemade hair gel is that it spoils quickly. I began adding the essential oil Lavender, and it has never spoiled since. I’m not exactly sure why, but it hasn’t! Here is my recipe. It’s completely natural and super easy.
Flax and Lavender Hair Gel
2 Tablespoons Flax Seeds
1 Cup of Water
10 Drops of Lavender Essential Oil
Instructions: Bring water to a boil in a pan. Add Flax seeds. Set timer for 10 minutes, and stir. Do not stop stirring. Water should be softly simmering. When timer ends, strain out the flax seeds and let liquid fall into a jar. Put contents in fridge to cool, then add lavender.
It makes me so happy to share this with you. I really like my hair, probably too much, and I want you to enjoy your natural hair as much as I do mine. You can like your hair. You can enjoy it! It doesn’t have to be complicated, stressful, or expensive.
I would love to hear about what you do with your hair. Do you have any stories or advice? What do you do that brings joy to your life?
